A merge-request means: "hey, please pull my changes and merge them into your
branch". On gitorious you can clone a repository and have a copy in your
personal repositories. You push your local changes in there an can create a
merge request on the gitorious web-site. It's nothing more than a formalized
(and well documented) way to ask somebody to merge your changes.
