Now I couldn't resist sitting down for a few hours, and implementing it in 
this way to see how it looks/feels, and whether it is possible.

I've just committed the result to svn, so just take a look at it, and try it 
out.

I think it is great. Ok maybe that's just because I finally can switch areas 
again. But using that thing feels extremely intuitive. I have left the toolbar 
area switchers there for now. Since the tabs are in the top-right corner, it 
might be faster to click toolbar buttons instead of moving the mouse up there. 
But alone as an indication of the current state, I think it's worth it.
