I was feeling pretty dumb about this until I read the section "Handling
patches" in:

"Developing software with GNU"
****************************

   "This manual is a tutorial introduction to the GNU development tools,
which include Emacs, Make, Automake, Autoconf, Libtool, Gettext, and
Texinfo. All of these tools are introduced in this manual to help you
become a contributing member of the free software community."

...

"Handling patches"
================

   "_Believe it or not, I really don't know how to do that. I need a
volunteer to explain this to me so I can explain it then in this
section_"

And, BTW, I do know how to run diff, but I believe there is more to creating a
correct patch than redirecting diff to a file.
