Can't reproduce. Using KDevelop CVS HEAD, I created two "Generic C++ Application" projects, I tried both "Custom Makefiles" and "Automake Based". Neither showed any problems and both were imported in seconds without any large increase in memory usage.

The only source package I could find was called "glucat-0.1.4-hash_map.tgz" though. Is this the same package?
