I don't think that will help either.  I get this in the generated Makefile.in:

#>-     rm ${srcdir}/script.local
#>+ 1
        rm $(DESTDIR)${srcdir}/script.local

BTW, looks like Ralf already removed these lines from the Makefile.am in CVS.
