You mean instead of the widget on the side? Just liked the idea I suppose. I 
was planning to offer it as a dialog as well, which brings me onto the second 
question....

That's a nice idea. Actually I am only use the straight file dialog right now 
because it's easy. I'd like to extend it to offer extra features, such as 
your idea here, and the ability to select file type. Then I can add a 
"New..." option to the File menu and Gideon newcomers can finally be less 
confused!
