argl... forgot that the FreeBSD guys renamed libdb.so to libdbxx.so. Switch to 
lib/catalog and replace "-ldb" by "-ldb41" in Makefile.am, that should do the 
trick.

Does someone know a project that has a good BDB autotools check? I can't 
believe that there is no standard platform-independent fool-proof check for 
one of the most used libraries out there...
