I have it applied, built and running. I have noticed that changing UI choices
usually requires a restart whether it involves IDEAI or not.

I switched to *Toplevel window mode* after building the latest CVS, and had a
rather unusual experience. The main window was never visible. I could
Alt+Tab through the windows, but when I selected the one that should have
been the main window, no windo with focus was displayed. I could select
different buffers, all of which were in their own window, but I couldn't get
to the window with the tool bars, and menu bars. I also found I couldn't
kill the windows with the 'x' in the top right. The buffer seemed to be
closing, but an empty window remained. I restarted, and a master window came
up. I switched to another mode, and things started working.

I've observed that the UI sometimes changes appearance after the second or
third restart. Since I'm not really sure what things are supposed to look
like, It's hard to tell if this is 'normal' behavior, or a malfunction.

Yes. I should have tried that first. I took someone's advice a long time
ago, and perhaps I shouldn't have. He told me I only needed to do that when
I first got the CVS image. Thereafter, all I had to do was make, and at
most, ./configure and make. I guess what happened was that a new
subdirectory was added and it didn't have a Makefile. That meant I needed to
run automake (or something like that.)

I've had good intentions of learning how all this automake, autocofig, make,
and etc., magic works for a long time. I bought a book called _Programming
with GNU Software_ a few years back. The first thing the author had me do
after the nickle tour of Unix and Bash was to use Emacs. I believe I finally
learned to use XEmacs, after a few years of effort. Perhaps I'm ready for
chapter 4 /Compiling and Linking with GCC/. :-/
