To my knowledge, these characters _are_ part of latin-1.   As I don't have a Gideon binary for SuSE, I cannot try it, but I hope somenone can make sure that the bug is gone, by copying some Ruby code that should expose the bug, into Gideon:  <code> text = %Q§ å ä ö § </code>
