Problems in both gideon editors

Hi Bernd,

We need a small addition to util lib that has the following functions:

* canonical pathnames
* abstraction for comparing inodes, etc.
* locating source, object files (a la GNU make VPATH)

Then convert such error-prone codes to this lib.
