Are you sure having windows of an app all over multiple desktops would be 
more usable? Top Level mode basically gets you a typical X11 app like 
look'n'feel.

I don't recall that. Isn't it just a slim window with the menu and toolbars? 
That's how it should look like. That's similar to what happens when you 
choose top level mode in many applications, say, DDD.
