Debugging thread patch

Hi

Here's a first pass at debugging threads.

There are a few problems
- the var tree variables from one thread are removed when switching to a 
different thread - the first time _only_ after a stop.
- the status line has a newline in it sometimes, making it unreadable for 
that status.
- other?

Could the people interested give it a whirl and see if they like it. I'm 
looking for feedback - on the ui mainly but not exclusively. Patches to fix 
problems would be applied immediately with gratitude.
