With MDI as it is implemented in KDevelop-2, I hope, you can have it
your way, and I can have it my way. 

This has nothing to do w/ Microsoft. MDI is a good solution for some
problems and a very bad solution for most other problems. In the
context of an IDE it makes perfect sense. But this is strictly my
personal opinion. 

Window splitting can be easily led "ad absurdum" if you have "many"
windows open. 

Please check out KDevelop-2 and look at whether you can live with the
tabbed mode ("KDevelop classic").
