Hi, after an update kontact doesn't start.
After starting akonadiconsole and in there Server restart i get this here:

MySQL server log contains errors.

Can you try setting up a new (empty) user home directory, log in with that and 
try to start kontact there. If that works, then the problem is in your account 
or akonadi data of that other user where it fails. 

Might be a good helper for a start... then you could delete your local akonadi 
store, your local .cache directory and/or install akonadiconsole to get some 
more debugging input...

did you do a akonadictl fsck?

Hi from Braunschweig,

Yeah, i will try it.
But after some doing here: deinstall mariadb, delete mysql folder in
/var/lib/ and install mariadb again, there wasn't any changes.
maybe i can reinitialize akonadi. but i don'T find anything for this.

Subject: E-Mails are cleared out from IMAP-folders after mailbox migration

The background:
I own a private domain and use the service of a provider for E-Mail services 
to that domain. Because my long term provider decided to impose a migration 
from IMAP/SMTP to Microsoft356 upon its customers, I had to change my 
provider. I decided to do that by making a local copy of all my E-Mails in my 
inbox and all IMAP Folders below and then copy them back to an IMAP/SMTP 
account which was set up freshly at my new provider. All this should by done 
by Kontact/KMail.

System: kdepim/akonadi binary packages of a standard OpenSuse 15.6 
installation, version: 23.08.5, release bp156.1.3.

After sucessfully setting up the fresh account I moved E-Mails and folders 
back to the Inbox. Then the first weird thing occurred: Some of those folders 
reappeared in the local folder structure. I removed those obvious duplicates 
by deleting the folders one by one in the tree view.

After a few minutes I noticed that some of the folders in the IMAP tree were 
cleared out (not all!). Fortunately I had a backup on an external harddisk, so 
I was able to restore the missing E-Mails in a local tree (although it took 
quite some time). However, after copying the E-Mails from their local to the 
corresponding IMAP folder the same happened again. The IMAP folders were 
emptied again after a few minutes.

I repeated this several times, always the same. I can confirm that the E-Mails 
were copied to the server of the provider, I checked this via Webmail. So 
there must be something in the client/agent/akonadi chain that makes that 
undemanded folder clearence.  

Please give me some advice, how to solve that problem.

This looks like akonadi has duplicated and inconsistent code to check if 
akonadi is running. 


I am running

$ akonadictl -v 
akonadictl 6.5.0 (25.08.0) 
$ 

on Manjaro stable.

akonadi based apps like akonadiconsole do not start:

$ akonadiconsole 
setHighDpiScaleFactorRoundingPolicy must be called before creating the 
QGuiApplication instance 
Please register the custom scheme 'cid' via 
QWebEngineUrlScheme::registerScheme() before installing the custom scheme 
handler. 
libva error: /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so init failed 
stores  4

copy the mails from the local folders to the remote folders one folder at a 
time.

Otherwise, the best advice I can give you is to try a newer version of KMail. 
A slow-moving distribution like yours may have some advantages, but the fact 
that it provides super old versions of applications which will never receive 
any bugfixes is rather a disadvantage.

Hi,

thanks for following up.

Some old packages were still installed on the system (knotes and akonadi-
notes). After removing them, running akonadictrl fsck and restarting the KDE 
session, the system worked again.

I will run pacman -Qm after each update and check if there are stale package 
left.

Maybe, but this is the version OpenSuse ships for their distro 15.6, the 
OpenSuse development communitiy considers that version as stable. Do you think 
the data (emails) management system has undergone major changes from 23.08 to 
25.08?

That's what I did. In my Webmail interface I created a parallel tree 
structure, say instead of folder "ABC" I created a folder "ABC___ " (for each 
affected folder). Then in contact I copied the messages of the affected folders 
to their destination. This time the messages remained. They even remained when 
I moved them to their target destination (i.e. ABC___ -> ABC).

So the problem seems to be solved for the moment. Still I have a bad feeling, 
considering that E-Mails might vanish without actively deleting them. Some of 
the emails I have been keeping for more than fifteen years. I'd probably notice 
that they are gone not before I start searching for them. I think, I will make 
more frequent use of the vailable backup tools such as pimsettingexporter.

I have been using SuSE/OpenSuse over decades, since a friend persuaded me to 
give Linux a chance. As to their versions of applications philosophy, well, 
it's their philosophy and a lot of people put in much effort and time to 
provide us a stable desktop distribution, which is easy to work with. There 
are thousands of packages. To be honest, kdepim is the part which gives me 
most of the headaches among these.

yes, this is 2 years of development.
Leap 16 comes with the latest KDE version and is Gold master as of today:

You may consider an upgrade

Its openSUSE since ~15 years. No SuSE, S.u.S.E, OpenSUSE or OpenSuse.

Yes, it's stable. The upside of using a distribution like openSUSE Leap is 
that most applications receive little or no major updates so that nothing can 
break. The downside is that most applications will receive little or no 
bugfixes either. I'm using openSUSE Tumbleweed which receives loads of updates 
all of the time. Occasionally, something breaks. Most of the time it's quickly 
fixes with the next round of updates. Both approaches have their pros and cons.

I do remember that there was a severe bug in KMail when you moved multiple 
messages. It looked as if all messages had been moved to the new location but 
in reality only the first message had been moved successfully. I think this bug 
was fixed long before the version you are using but I'm not sure. Copying 
multiple messages worked without problems.

Under the hood there have been major changes because all KDE apps were ported 
from Qt 5 to Qt 6. Apart from that quite a few bugs have been fixed.

That's good to hear.

That's understandable. Obviously, this should never happen, but moving implies 
deleting at the old location.

Yes, backups are important. I'm not sure if pimsettingexporter is the best 
tool for this, but any tool is better than no backup.

Yes, and that's fine. I'm also using openSUSE since decades. The only difference 
is that I chose the always-bleeding-edge Tumbleweed over the stable Leap. 
Since I'm developing KDE apps for me the always-bleeding-edge variant is the 
better choice.

Yes. Sadly, KDE PIM gets way too little love. Only very few people are working 
on those apps.
