Quotation mark style in KMail

Hi,
I use plain text exclusively when viewing and composing emails.

When replying to an email, I notice that KMail uses the > character to 
indicate quoted lines. However, in the reading view, it displays a vertical 
bar (|) instead.

Why is there this difference? Is it possible to always use the > character?
