Well, I thought I knew what I was talking about, but I see that I
didn't.

That reference indicates that your original attempt should have been
valid.  It also indicates that my suggestion is equivalent to your
original.  Finally, it indicates "file:" followed by an absolute file
system path (in other words, omitting the two slashes resulting in
only one) is valid, too.

But for sure, the reference indicates that a "host" part must follow
only two slashes.

I tried all these possibilities with Chrome and validated the
reference above.  Only two slashes is invalid; one slash is OK; three
slashes are OK; your original attempt I validated as OK.

I guess the difference is Firefox versus Chrome.  I do not have
Firefox installed to test.
