This may be way off point. I didn't try to carefully read your problem, but
I'll ask, are you aware of the changes made at google / gmail that now require
an application specific password to so that third party applications (e.g.,
kmail) can access google / gmail?
I can't recite exactly what you have to do to create and use an aplication
specific password (which, btw, iirc, is all numeric) -- I think you have to do
something (in / at google) like enable 2FA (2 Factor Authrorization) and then
some other step lets you create an application specific password.
The change occurred this year, maybe either the end of March or the end of
May, although as sometimes seems to happen for google related things, the
change wasn't made simultaneously for all users -- i.e., some (but not all)
users may have been able to continue to use google / gmail with 3rd party
applications after that date.
(For me, I vaguely remember that the change for me occurred late in the day on
the deadline day -- or maybe early in the morning of the following day --
kmail continued to work with gmail until the following morning.
(BTW, I access gmail via pop3, not IMAP, but the change was supposedly made
for all of google, i.e. it should have affected both pop and IMAP (and whatever
else).)
(I should add that I did set up an application specific password and kmail via
pop (and smtp) continues to work for me.)
Good luck!
