I'm also only using POP3 -> maildir, currently on openSuse 42.3 using kmail Version 5.7.80 beta
compiled from source (from around march 17th, 2018)
Just check in kmail settings Accounts -> Receiving -> Local Folders
Click on "Modify..." and you get the dialog telling you the path to the maildir folder ...
but I assume you already knew this ...
