How to set up Google Mail account in KMail?

I'm trying to link KMail2 to my gmail.com account but I'm just going round 
in circles.

I found I need an app password, but even after creating it google keeps 
going back again to get me to log in to my account there.

I also can't enter that password in KMail, as instructed by google, because 
it's greyed out (and shown as a single character).

What do I have to do, please?
