MariaDB is a drop-in replacement. At least on Debian. I just switched
packages. Years ago already.
Many distros do not package MySQL anymore. Debian still does.
Of course Pablo is right: It won't make a performance difference unless
you change other configuration parameters. Setting higher InnoDB buffer
pool size can help. At least from my subjective experience it does here.
However I have a kinda crazy setup with a huge ton of mails and folders.
