The most simple approach (for IMAP accounts) is to re-create the 
account. I did this for a few of my accounts. Make sure that all 
messages are really on the IMAP server (e.g. by checking via webmail) 
before you remove the old account.

For local accounts (including POP accounts) re-creating the account is 
not so easy. But you could still create a new POP account for the new 
mail and keep the old account as archive.
