I had been experiencing what can only be described as farcical behaviour by 
KMail, when I was recommended to try akonadiconsole to delete a folder's cache 
and then resynchronise the folder. I did that to the worst offending folders 
and I've had a much smoother ride ever since. It's clear that robustness 
against bad messages is not a design criterion in KMail - or if it is, it 
needs more work.

A word to the wise, though: akonadiconsole doesn't give any sign of what it's 
doing, so you need some way of being sure that it's finished working before 
stopping it. I used gkrellm to monitor disk activity, which did the job 
nicely.
