This might be true, but we have contact information interchange formats, one
of which is vCard

KAddressbook and ownCloud support vCard 3, but support some fields differently
and don't support others. (For fun, export a contact from GMail's contacts in
vcard format and import into KAddressbook and ownCloud).

In any case, I created a group on ownCloud called test and added a contact to
that group. Then I downloaded the contact's information from ownCloud (.vcf)
and looked at it with Kate. There is no group information in the vcf file. So
it seems that the grouping of contacts is by ownCloud's design external to the
contact information.

Since the grouping of ownCloud's addressbook doesn't get transmitted to
KAddressbook it seems KAddressbook can't match the grouping you set in
ownCloud.

It is possible but only for a smaller selection of fields.

Both ownCloud and KAddressbook could solve a larger chunk of these problems by
supporting vCard 4 ( https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=337759 ) (
https://github.com/owncloud/contacts/issues/553 ).
