Only problem I had with postgresql backend was messages were not marked as
read. For about 3-4 months, I had to live with all messages being unread.

And with akonadi 1.10.3, it got fixed. At no point, kmail was unable to
send/receive email.

Is it feasible for you to upgrade akonadi?

I have kmail 4.11.2/akonadi 1.10.3/postgresql 9.3.1 happily working here on
archlinux.

HTH.
