  Eventually found a solution, though not an explanation.
  
Went into the SO's Gmail setup and requested an additional ASP 
(Application-Specific Password).

Used that in Mageia-3 installs on desktop, laptop, and netbook.
  All worked fine.
  
In the meantime, on the SO's desktop the original ASP is still 
working well (on Mandriva 2010.2).
