I found that too, had to create a new sub-folder and then move the folders 
after import.

Have you tried the "Export KMail Data" tool? This opens a new window called 
"PIM Setting Exporter" which has 2 entries in the file menu of back up and 
restore data.

It seems to create an archive of everything that KMail needs including the 
Akonadi data.
