I have been receiving the following message or variations since Friday (Oct
12). This is on a Gmail account. I also have an account on an MS Exchange
2007 server that was giving SSL related errors. I turned off SSL and the
Exchange messages are sent.
I had tried two times to reply to this message with the suggestion of
turning off SSL hoping that Gmail would respond as Exchange did. However
this is the message I receive.
Failed to transport message. Your SMTP server does not support PLAIN.
Choose a different authentication method. The server responded: 5.7.1
Username and Password not accepted. Learn more at 5.7.1

The suggested answer is not available. I also was receiving messages
indicating incorrect user ID and password, when nothing had changed.
I too was receiving the prompt for password within Kmail on Friday. Since
Monday I have seen the prompt sporadically or at least in a way that I
cannot determine a pattern.
My suggestion and this error message may not even be related to Russ's
issue.
FYI, I am sending this from within Gmail as Kmail refuses to send through
Gmail.
