my apologies to you Kevin if you are indeed a KDEPIM developer, 
something I had not noticed. Your signature states KDE Dev, but not 
specifically what parts.

Obviously being a dev of another piece of KDE does not make you a guru 
of all the other bits and pieces but the comments he makes is the best 
clue I have seen so far as to why this function is gone.

I will go a mile extra next week (slow internet at home) and 
download/install Kub Beta w 12.04 in a virtualbox machine, make a fresh 
KMail user and see if it then works. If it still does not work I can 
only consider it broken, at least in Kubuntu w KDE 4.8.1 and apparently 
OpenSuse w KDE 4.8.x
