No, I do not suspend the computer or change networks. I do lock the  
desktop with a screensaver and kill the monitor after awhile, but not  
the whole system. The problem with doing what you suggest is that I  
read my mail via imap and then POP it for local storage.
Also most of the crashes happen when loading images in emails. I think  
you mentioned something about switching rendering engines. I might try  
that and see if it stabilizes things. Thanks!
