So the first thing is to try to find out what is actually running.  Call up 
the System Monitor (Ctrl-Esc), and type 'kontact' into the filter field at the 
top.  You should find one or more files there, in this situation, and hovering 
over each one will confirm if they are connected with kontact.  If they are, 
kill them.

Are you saying that you have no backup whatsoever of your calendar?  If so, 
and if you have overwritten it when you re-installed, you cannot get it back.  
Take a look at ~/.kde/share/apps/korganizer and see what date is on the 
std.vcf - if it's before you re-installed, it's recoverable.
