Hi,
Right click on a folder (mailbox representation) --> Proterties --> uncheck 
"Act on unread messages" might help some ...

I use gmane.org for mailing list to nntp conversion and track the (gmane-
available) lists through knode rather than email/kmail ... helps some too 
...
