Well I went through all the steps outlined in your comment on 8-10. 
List is created in Contacts is correct, When I select the group in New 
Message it says there are 10 contacts (correct number) but all the cards 
when displayed are blank.

So I guess I have one of the weird cases. Tomorrow I will try all this 
in opensuse 12.1 mS 3 and see what happens.
