Hi Ingo, 
you are totally right that Google is quite erratic. By now the messages have 
appeared again. It seems that they 'have taken some time out'. In fact the 
first place I went to look for them was the folder 'All messages' but I didn't 
see them there either, so I assumed they were gone forever. In future, I will 
only copy mails, and then delete them in the original folder, that seems the 
safer way to me. There are some other issues with Google as well, like getting 
a message from time to time that my folders do not exist anymore (doesn't say 
whether locally on my computer, where they are bright and shining, or on the 
server side). At least in the end nothing really bad has happened so far. It 
is not the really reassuring though.

Thanks for your support. I don't feel alone anymore with Google's weird 
behaviour.
