Something similar happened to me today.
Turned out to be the fault of Nepomuk.. sorta.
Apparently I had a "hung" automount for an external drive.
The drive had been knocked-out by a power outage and when
things came back they didn't mount properly. And it seems
that Nepomuk tried to index that drive anyway -- and got hung
too when trying to access it.
One way to know if the problem is Nepomuk-related:
go into System Settings->Advanced tab->Desktop Search
See if that hangs too.
check all your mounts and make sure they are working properly.
