I think that if anything was left over, still running, KMail wouldn't start a 
new session - or at least would warn you of the possibility.  How recent is 
your version?  This could be very important.  Quite long freezes were common a 
while back, but were cured some time ago - I'm not sure whether that was in 
late 4.3 or early 4.4 days.
