All I did was right-click in the center panel - the one where all your 
contacts are listed.  From there I selected New Group, it asked for a name for 
the group.  Then in the box below I typed the first couple of letters of the 
names I wanted adding, and got a popup selection of matching names from which 
I could select.

This is in the Personal Contacts addressbook, managed by Akonadi.  Why you 
have New Group greyed out, I don't know.  It's fine here.
