That's a server, not a kmail issue.

That said, kmail uses 3 states: new, unread and read.  Read and unread are 
server based; New is client based.  A message can be new on one computer, and 
unread on another.  Problem is once a message is read, kmail won't treat it as 
new, even if never read on a particular computer.
