Thanks, both!
I hadn't spotted those extra buttons, but that has fixed my immediate problem.
My other problem (as yet unmentioned) is that kmail seems to be very slow
when accessing my (numerous) mail folders. I see from the FAQ that a
solution is proposed there, so I'll try that before requesting help.

I don't follow all the developments, as kmail has been working so well
in the past. Coming effectively new to it the only FAQ I found only had
one question relating to importing mail folders. The FAQ you pointed out
is much better!
