Yes, it is working, I can now use dimap for all folders without interval
checking and an extra imap account, which only sees the inbox, with interval
checking. The regular email check is now instant, as expected.

However, there is one drawback to this solution: At startup of kmail, I want
to do a full check to update all folders (they change when I access them from
other computers). As far as I can see, kmails 'check on startup' will check
all accounts and cannot be configured to do otherwise. So the inbox is checked
twice, once with each account. But since I have a number of filters configured
that move mail from the inbox to other folders, all such emails matching filter
conditions end up twice in their respective destination folders. Of course
that's not what I want.
I tried to set up the disconnected IMAP account (the one with all folders) to
list all folders with the exception of the inbox to avoid this problem. But
this apparantly does not work, i.e. the inbox is listed although I unchecked
it in the list of locally subscribed folders. Maybe that's due to the fact
that on the imap account in question all folders have to be subfolders of the
inbox, and maybe one cannot locally subscribe to subfolders of a folder which
is not locally subscribed (although the corresponding dialog does not indicate
this).

Any ideas how I could resolve this problem?

Best,
Gandalf
