Are you authenticating the send? Can you check if the time between the
last mail _check_ and the send makes a difference? I assume that you
check you mail when you open kmail, that could mean that you are
already authenticated and thus can skip that step.

Try with a different server and see if that is the case as well. I
trust you, Anne, so if you want temporary access to another SMTP
server email me off list.
