Adding messages to a thread is not possible (at least not in a generic 
way).

Removing messages from a thread is possible by creating 
an "apply-manually-only" filter which removes the two headers 
References and In-reply-to. In KDE 3.5 with IMAP folders the messages 
still stay in the thread after the removal of those two headers, so 
there the workaround does not really work.
