One thing to check, on the sending tab, is what you have set for 
authentication.  Quite often (mostly?) you use authentication to collect mail 
from and ISP but not to send it.  Gmail, however, does require authentication, 
and your login must be in full, e.g. lisi at gmail.com.

The only time I used 'Check what the server supports' it gave me a wrong 
answer.
