This doesn't really answer your question, but does "Troubleshoot IMAP 
Cache" help or does Updating the Cache also abort after 999 threads?


FWIW, when I still used GMail with POP3 I was always annoyed by the fact 
that GMail listed new messages only in chucks of 300-400 messages (a 
number that was easily exceeded within one day by a few high-volume 
mailing lists I am subscribed to), so that I had to check GMail for new 
messages several times to get all new messages. After a long weekend 
or, God forbid, two weeks of holiday this got so irritating that I 
eventually stopped using GMail. I wouldn't be surprised if they had 
similar insanities in their IMAP implementation.
