[kdepim-users] kmail Fast for HTML, but SLOW for plain-text

I'm running kmail 1.9.9 from kdepim 3.5.9 on Scientific Linux 5 and I've
recently noticed a peculiarity in the performance of kmail.
I've noticed this both on IMAP and dimap.
Here is the symptom:
I click on a message and it appears in the message pane. I noticed that
lately it has seemed quite sluggish (perhaps since the 3.5.9 upgrade). Then
I noticed that SOME messages display immediately, while others take several
seconds to display.
Experimentation has shown that if the message body is of type "Plain Text
Document" ( as reported in the Message Structure Viewer ) the message takes
several seconds to display, but if it is of type "HTML Document" it displays
instantly. This is true regardless of whether I have automatic HTML
rendering turned on or off. I've tried turning off custom fonts and custom
colors to see if that makes a difference. I've tried turning off or on the
Message Structure Viewer. I've tried pretty much every configuration option
I could find.
I can't find any other relevant variables. The slow rendering time for plain
text messages is the same whether the message is one word or many pages.
Likewise, HTML messages display instantly, whether they are big or small, and
whether rendering is turned on or off.
