I'm sorry, but I don't know the answer to this question. On one hand, it
would be a bad experience for the users to lose their tags when they
upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2. So there should be an upgrade path. On the
other hand, providing/implementing such an upgrade path costs time. So
I guess nobody knows the answer to this question.
If you want to be on the safe side then you should probably not start
using tags before Akonadi.
