Hi Anne.
Here is a small tip I use:
just open up mutt [1] on the affected directory, check if the mail is still there, then copy that folder to a safe place, close kmail/kontact and kill all its remaining kios. After that, just delete the indexes to that mbox/Maildir. copy back the backup folder.
