I don't know about exporting,  but I have somewhere around several thousand 
messages archival in nature stuffed into various folders in kmail. I don't 
quite understand the question,  I guess?

And as for exporting,  "Save as" seems to work pretty well for me,  so far.

Of course,  all of those folders,  being added to occasionally but not 
(normally) ever getting anything deleted from them,  when I see a 
several-second pause in the response of the software and I look down and 
see "Compacting folder xxx" unnecessarily and I need to wait until it's done 
that does get to be a bit of an irritation...
