distro (did you use your distros PM to install it)? I use aspell myself. I had 
problems getting it working in kmail once. It said it wasn't installed (lies) 
I just had to find the right place to configure it. when you go to 
settings -> spellchecker -> dictionaries do you see multiple dictionaries?
