The local cache or index of the IMAP folder might be corrupt. I suggest 
deleting the local cache of the offending folder(s). You can find the 
folder cache and index in ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/imap/.<some 
number>.directory/..., where <some number> is the internal identifier 
of the IMAP account. You should be able to identify the correct account 
by looking at the names of the cached folders.

If for example the folder 'test' is broken then remove the files
  test
  .test.index
  .test.index.ids
  .test.index.sorted (if it exists)

Of course, KMail should not be running while you do this.
