# man pkill

       pkill will send the specified signal (by  default  SIGTERM)  to
       each  process instead of listing them on stdout.

So at least the pkill on my system will send a SIGTERM (aka -15) to the 
app. Does your pkill really send the most destructive signal by 
default?
